“The design of Orbital Flex™ began when thinking of how a cylinder rolls inside a larger cylinder in an orbiting motion”. Carlos Hoefken – CTO
I liked the rolling part, but the hypocycloidal orbiting motion does not align for gearing as it presents challenges transferring power to the gear output.
If you replace the smaller orbiting cylinder with a cone, you maintain the advantages of the rolling engagement while leveraging the cones vertex to align with the gearing output.
The aligning vertex introduces a small angular rocking motion to the smaller orbiting cone. This rocking motion is filtered out by using a flexible coupling.
Producing a smooth high torque gear design (Orbital Flex™).
